Rangoli Competition at JMA Pilani

There is so much geometry in Rangoli and one should not be surprised to hear new jargons like Rangometry. National Council of Teachers of Mathematics – NCTM Virginia USA, DePaul University Chicago USA etc are serious about teaching simple graph theory, Euler paths and circuits, numerical patterns, symmetry, and growing patterns through Rangoli which is also called Kolam in South India.

Diwali is just not a festival of lights and sounds and it includes colours in the form of clothes, sweets and above all Rangoli which is a timeless tradition that is followed all over India. A rangoli usually has a geometrical structure that is also symmetrical. The design patterns often consist of natural elements like animals, flowers, etc. In many cases, designs are passed down through generations with some of them being hundreds of years old.

Jamuna Mishra Academy - JMA Pilani established in 2004 follows a rich tradition of celebrating various days of national and international significance. The school has four Houses namely Mercury, Venus, Jupiter and Neptune for holding various competitions. Every year before Diwali, a Rangoli competition is held and the four houses put the best of their teamwork and creativity in making amazing designs.

For 2018, the Rangoli competition was held on 03 Nov 2018 and the first position went to Mercury, second position to Neptune and third position to Venus. Dr Suman Mishra President and Mrs Booma Natarajan Principal JMA Pilani congratulated the winners and urged them to follow the Indian traditions at all times.
